Cottonwood Canyon Road — Bryce Canyon to Highway 89 via Paria River Badlands

Bentonite badlands that'll swallow you whole when wet.

Moderate

Cottonwood Canyon Road doesn’t run through the Grand Staircase-Escalante — it defines it. The route drops south from Cannonville, follows Cottonwood Creek through slot narrows and past Grosvenor Arch (one of the finest double arches in Utah, worth the two-mile spur), then drops into the Paria River valley before hitting US-89 near Big Water. The Cockscomb formation — a tilted, razor-backed ridge of Jurassic rock — shadows the road for miles and makes the landscape feel genuinely alien. Depending on recent rain, you’re riding hard-packed gravel or something between axle grease and concrete. Both states exist at the same spot, just different days.

Difficulty is entirely weather-dependent. Dry: this is a moderate high-clearance run that most capable 4WDs handle without drama. Wet: bentonite clay makes it undriveable and dangerous regardless of what’s under your hood — people have gotten stuck here for days. Call the BLM Kanab office before you leave pavement. No permits required but also no services, no cell signal, and water sources are unreliable. Best season is May–June and September–October. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the corridor. Plan 3–5 hours one-way in good conditions.
