Hackberry Creek Canyon Road

Expert canyon descent through Cerbat Mountains

Expert

Hackberry Creek Canyon Road drops dramatically from the Cerbat Mountains into the Colorado River valley, offering one of Arizona’s most technical canyon descents outside of the famous mining districts. The trail begins innocently enough on Forest Service Road 125, but quickly becomes a white-knuckle affair as it navigates loose shale slopes and narrow rock shelves barely wider than a full-size pickup. The most notorious section, known locally as ‘The Slide,’ requires precise throttle control to prevent losing traction on ball-bearing-sized rocks that cover the steep grade.

This is expert-level terrain that will humble overconfident drivers and punish mechanical failures. A short-wheelbase vehicle with aggressive tires, skid plates, and recovery gear is essential—along with a spotter for the blind corners and off-camber sections. Winter months offer the best conditions, as summer heat makes recovery operations dangerous. The reward is access to remote camping along Hackberry Creek and views across the Colorado River valley that few people ever see. Plan a full day and bring extra water for both vehicle and crew.
