Great Miami River Recreation Trail

Canal towpath heritage trail through Ohio's heartland

Easy

The Great Miami River Recreation Trail follows 78 miles of converted rail-trail and canal towpath from Cincinnati north through Dayton, tracing the route of the historic Miami & Erie Canal that once connected Lake Erie to the Ohio River. While primarily designed for bikes and hiking, multiple access points accommodate high-clearance vehicles for supply runs and camping access. The most interesting vehicular segments run from Miamisburg to Tipp City, where you can still see original limestone locks and spillways from the 1840s canal system, and several gravel maintenance roads provide legitimate backcountry access to the river bottomlands.

This is easy-grade terrain suitable for stock SUVs and pickup trucks, though spring flooding can make some sections impassable. No special equipment required beyond basic ground clearance for the occasional washout or muddy spot. Open year-round, but best from May through October when river levels are stable. No permits needed for day use, and several developed campgrounds provide basecamp options. While it won’t challenge your vehicle, the trail offers excellent historical context and serves as a solid introduction to Ohio’s canal heritage for families or groups with mixed vehicle capabilities.
