The Watson River cuts a raw valley through the Greenlandic tundra west of Kangerlussuaq, carrying meltwater from the inland ice sheet toward Davis Strait. This 47-kilometer circuit follows rough mining roads and caribou paths along the river’s north bank, passing the abandoned DYE-2 radar station ruins and crossing multiple glacial outwash channels before looping back via the old construction road to Point 660 overlook.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for deep ruts, loose gravel, and seasonal creek fords. Summer months (June-September) offer the only viable window when permafrost thaw allows passage. No permits needed but fuel planning is critical – nearest supply is Kangerlussuaq. Dispersed camping allowed along the route. The payoff: raw Arctic wilderness, musk ox sightings, and direct access to the ice sheet margin where you can touch 10,000-year-old ice.
