Cottonwood Canyon Road — Dinosaur National Monument South Rim to Echo Park
Bentonite, river canyons, zero margin for error.
Most people drive Highway 40 past Dinosaur and never know this road exists. Cottonwood Canyon Road drops off the south rim of Dinosaur National Monument, winding 13 miles of eroded clay and bentonite shale down to Echo Park — the flat-bottomed confluence camp where the Green and Yampa rivers meet beneath Steamboat Rock. The bentonite is the whole story here: when it’s dry it’s dusty and manageable, when it’s wet it becomes a greasy, impassable mess that’ll swallow a Tacoma sideways. Dry conditions are non-negotiable.
This is a high-clearance 4WD run in dry weather — a stock Wrangler or 4Runner handles it fine when conditions cooperate, but you need to check road status with the monument before you roll. Bring all your water, there’s no potable source at the trailhead, and cell service is exactly zero once you leave the highway. Echo Park has a primitive campground with vault toilets and fire rings; permits are required May through September. Best window is late September through October when crowds thin and weather stabilizes. Fuel in Dinosaur, CO before you commit.
