Rims Road — Echo Park Desert Circuit via Yampa Bench
Clay roads, canyon walls, two rivers.
Most people drive to Dinosaur National Monument, glance at the quarry wall, and leave. The ones who keep going on Yampa Bench Road earn something different entirely. This 13-mile dirt shelf road hugs the rim above the Yampa River Canyon, crossing open pinyon-juniper flats before the descent to Echo Park — a broad, cottonwood-shaded confluence where the Green River swings around Steamboat Rock. The road itself is benign in dry conditions, but a single rain event turns the Uinta Basin clay into axle-deep grease. Plan accordingly or get towed out by a ranger who has seen it all before.
High clearance is required; 4WD is essential after any precipitation. The 13-mile Yampa Bench segment plus the 8-mile Echo Park spur total roughly 21 miles one-way. There are no services inside the monument — fuel in Dinosaur, CO or Vernal, UT. Dispersed camping is permitted at Echo Park with a fee paid at the monument entrance or online through Recreation.gov. The Uinta Formation clay roads are passable June through October in dry weather only. Cell service is absent. This is one of the most underrated canyon drives in the American West.

A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner will get through in dry conditions. The route is moderate, but the clay surface gets deeply rutted and slick when wet, so ground clearance and locking diffs matter more than a lift kit.
What happens to this trail when it rains?
The clay roads become impassable — not just slippery, but wheel-packing, axle-deep mud that will stop almost any vehicle. If rain is in the forecast or has fallen recently, don't attempt it. The NPS has closed this route for days after a single storm.
Do I need a permit to drive in and camp at Echo Park?
Yes. Echo Park campground requires a reservation through Recreation.gov, and you need a valid Dinosaur National Monument entry pass (America the Beautiful or daily fee). No walk-up camping at the park campground — book ahead.

The descent into Echo Park on the Echo Park Road spur is the most committing section — a narrow, steep switchback drop with loose dirt and minimal runoff room. It's not technically extreme, but there's no room to turn around partway down, and you're committed once you start.

Dinosaur, CO is your last reliable fuel stop, roughly 10-15 miles from the monument entrance — fill up there. Echo Park has potable water available seasonally at the campground, but confirm with the NPS before you go; it's shut off outside the main season.
