Franklin Mountains Desert Vista Loop
Desert mountain mining roads above the Rio Grande
This demanding loop circles the northern Franklin Mountains through classic Chihuahuan Desert landscape dotted with creosote, ocotillo, and century plants. The route follows historic mining roads past the abandoned McKelligon Canyon quarry operations and climbs to panoramic overlooks of the Rio Grande valley and Ciudad Juárez. The technical section around North Franklin Mountain includes steep limestone grades and loose rock descents that have challenged miners and military personnel for over a century.
Expert-level driving required — this is real desert mountain terrain with exposure, loose rock, and narrow shelf roads. A capable 4×4 with skid plates, recovery gear, and low-range gearing is mandatory. Best tackled October through March when temperatures are tolerable. Bring extra water, spare parts, and satellite communication. The payoff is solitude in rugged borderland country that few people ever see, with some of the finest desert mountain vistas in Texas.
