Organ Mountains Desert Peaks Trail

Gothic spires and technical desert rock crawling

Difficult

The Organ Mountains rise like gothic cathedral spires from the Chihuahuan Desert floor, and this backcountry route threads between the jagged volcanic needles that gave these peaks their name. The trail starts near Las Cruces and winds through Aguirre Spring Recreation Area before climbing into the heart of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument. Sharp volcanic rock and narrow canyon passages demand respect, with the notorious Rabbit Ears formation serving as a landmark for the most technical sections. Desert bighorn sheep and mountain lions call this country home.

Difficult terrain with sharp rock that can shred tires and undercarriage protection absolutely required. Summer heat makes this route dangerous – stick to fall through early spring when temperatures are manageable. No permits needed but bring extra water, tire repair kit, and emergency communications. Cell service is nonexistent once you leave the main access roads. The reward is some of the most dramatic desert mountain scenery in the Southwest and solitude that’s increasingly rare this close to a major city.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle this trail?

No, you need modifications - skid plates minimum, rock sliders recommended. The volcanic rock will chew up your undercarriage without proper protection.

Is this trail accessible in summer?

Technically yes, but don't. Summer temps hit 110°F+ with zero shade, making breakdowns potentially life-threatening.

Do I need permits to run Organ Mountains Desert Peaks Trail?

No permits required. It's BLM land with free access, but stay on designated routes to avoid fines.

What's the gnarliest section I should expect?

The volcanic rock shelves around mile 12 will test your approach angles and wheel placement. Take your time - bent tie rods are common here.

How much water should I carry for this trail?

Pack 2+ gallons per person minimum. Zero water sources on trail, and the desert will dehydrate you fast even in winter.
