Provincial Road 373 — Gods Lake Narrows to Oxford House Remote Community Circuit
Muskeg, ice roads, and zero margin for error.
Provincial Road 373 and its connecting winter road network reach northeast from Gillam toward Gods Lake Narrows and the Oxford House (Bunibonibee Cree Nation) area — communities that for most of the year are accessible only by air. When conditions allow in late winter, the ice roads solidify across lake chains and muskeg, threading through black spruce and tamarack lowlands that swallow vehicles whole in the shoulder seasons. The route passes through true Canadian Shield wilderness with no services, no fuel, and no rescue infrastructure. Summer attempts on the soft sections require serious mudding capability — the muskeg here doesn’t negotiate.
This is expert-level overlanding, full stop. A purpose-built expedition rig with recovery gear, redundant communications, substantial fuel range (400+ km without resupply), and cold-weather survival equipment is the minimum standard. Winter travel requires ice thickness confirmation through Manitoba Infrastructure before departure — roads open and close based on temperature and load ratings. Best window for winter road travel is typically late January through mid-March. Summer access to the full route is largely impractical without tracked or amphibious equipment. For overlanders who want to understand what genuine Manitoba backcountry means, even the approach roads to this network are a reckoning.
