Elephant Hill Road

Expert sandstone technical challenge

Expert

Elephant Hill Road snakes through some of Arizona’s most technical sandstone terrain, winding past towering rock formations and through narrow slot canyons that test both driver skill and vehicle capability. The route begins innocuously enough at the trailhead parking area, but quickly escalates into a series of steep, exposed climbs over slickrock faces that demand precise wheel placement and aggressive approach angles. The namesake Elephant Hill itself requires a technical crawl up sandstone ledges with minimal room for error, while the descent into Devil’s Kitchen tests suspension travel and driver nerve in equal measure.

This is expert-level terrain that requires modified 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and preferably 33-inch tires minimum. Stock vehicles need not apply — the exposure and technical difficulty will punish anything not properly equipped. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, avoiding summer’s brutal heat and winter’s unpredictable weather. No permits required but fuel up in Moab as services are non-existent in the backcountry. Multiple technical camping spots exist throughout the area, though most require hiking in from vehicle access points. Water is non-existent — pack everything you need.
