Coyote Flat Road — Big Pine to Coyote Flat via Westgard Pass Divide

Owens Valley to alpine silence at 11,000 feet.

Difficult

Most people blow through Big Pine on US-395 without a second glance. That’s a mistake. Head west on Crooked Creek Road off Westgard Pass and you’ll gain nearly 6,000 feet of elevation through a deteriorating track that tests your rig before it rewards you. The upper section past Crooked Creek Station gets genuinely rough — loose rock, steep ledges, and shelf road exposure that’ll have your passenger white-knuckling the grab bar. Once you crest into Coyote Flat itself, you’re standing in a wide-open alpine basin ringed by the White Mountains, with bristlecone pines on the ridgeline and complete silence. The flat hosts dispersed camping near a seasonal creek and serves as a launching pad into the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest from the back side.

This is not a moderate trail. Stock trucks will struggle badly on the upper half — you want a lifted, skid-plated rig with a locker and low-range gearing. Aired-down tires are mandatory. Best window is July through September; snow closes the upper road well into June most years. No permit required. Fuel up in Big Pine — there’s nothing out here. Cell service dies at the base of the climb. The payoff is one of the most dramatic high-country drives in the Eastern Sierra, with almost no traffic and genuine solitude at elevation.
