Carretera Austral Southern Section
Patagonia's remote gravel highway
The final 240-mile stretch of Chile’s Carretera Austral from Villa O’Higgins to Puerto Yungay crosses some of Earth’s most pristine wilderness. This gravel lifeline winds past the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, where glacial valleys carved by ancient ice reveal turquoise lakes and granite spires. The road dead-ends at Puerto Yungay, requiring a ferry across the Pascua River to continue into Argentina’s vastness.
Moderate to difficult depending on weather — Patagonian storms turn washboard gravel into mud pits without warning. High-clearance vehicle minimum with spare parts and emergency supplies; fuel available only in Villa O’Higgins and Puerto Yungay. Best November-March when daylight stretches 16 hours, but prepare for sudden weather changes. No permits required but inform Carabineros of travel plans. You’ll witness untouched Patagonian wilderness that fewer people see than summit Everest.
