Ruta del Río Baker Patagonia Circuit

Patagonia's wildest river valley adventure

Moderate

The Baker River runs turquoise through Chile’s wildest valleys, and this backcountry circuit follows old gaucho trails and logging roads along its upper reaches near Villa O’Higgins. You’ll ford tributary streams, navigate loose scree descents, and cross the notorious Paso del Viento where Patagonian winds can literally stop your rig. The route connects remote estancias with views of Glaciar O’Higgins and the Northern Patagonian Ice Field’s eastern edge.

This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring solid 4WD skills and river crossing experience. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle most sections, but a winch helps with the steeper descents and potential mud wallows after rain. Run it December through March when river levels drop and weather windows open. Fuel up in Villa O’Higgins—this is your last reliable supply for 200km. The payoff is untouched Patagonian wilderness, world-class trout fishing, and camping spots that’ll ruin you for anywhere else.
