Refugio Nacional Alacalufes Camping Puerto Edén
This isolated campground sits on the shores of Wellington Island in the heart of Chilean Patagonia’s fjordland. Run by CONAF, it offers basic facilities including pit toilets and designated camping areas, but no fresh water or supplies. The setting is pristine temperate rainforest with views across Última Esperanza Sound toward the Darwin Range. Weather here is brutal — expect rain 300+ days per year and constant wind.
Access is exclusively by chartered boat from Puerto Natales (8-hour journey) or small plane to Puerto Edén airstrip. The campground serves as a staging point for expeditions into the Alacalufes Reserve and glacier approaches. Book well ahead through CONAF — space is extremely limited and weather often scrubs flights for days.
Patagonian wilderness camp accessible only by boat/plane
