Mirador Cerro Fitz Roy desde Ruta 40
This unmarked pullout on Ruta 40, about 15 kilometers south of El Chaltén, provides the classic long-distance view of Cerro Fitz Roy and its satellite peaks. The granite spires appear to rise impossibly from the flat steppe, creating one of Patagonia’s most iconic vistas. Early morning light turns the peaks golden while afternoon brings dramatic cloud formations. Several vehicles can park here safely off the paved road.
The viewpoint sits at the transition zone where the endless Patagonian plains meet the Andes foothills. No facilities, but it’s a mandatory photo stop for anyone running Ruta 40 through this section. Wind is fierce and constant — keep doors and tailgates secured.
