Capel Curig to Llanberis — Snowdonia High Mountain Pass Road via Pen-y-Pass

Snowdonia's mountain spine in raw Welsh weather.

Moderate

Pen-y-Pass sits at 359 metres above sea level between Capel Curig and Llanberis, and on a wet October morning when the clouds are shredding across the Glyderau ridge above you, it feels considerably higher. This is Wales’s mountain heartland — the route runs northwest along the Nant Gwynant valley past Llyn Gwynant and Llyn Padarn, climbing through tight rocky sections where runoff sheets across the road and the guardrails are the only thing between you and a serious drop. The Pen-y-Pass car park is the main waypoint, serving as the launch point for Snowdon’s Pyg and Miners’ Tracks, and on busy summer weekends the approach road becomes a controlled crawl.

This is a high-clearance scenic route rather than hardcore technical 4×4 — stock SUVs handle it fine in dry conditions, but winter ice and summer tourist traffic are the real hazards. A 4WD with good all-terrain tyres makes the shoulder-season runs far more comfortable. No permit required. Fuel in Llanberis or Betws-y-Coed. The real payoff is the shoulder-season window — April and October deliver empty roads and dramatic light. Cell service is patchy through the valley drops. Camp at Gwern Gof Uchaf farm campsite near Tryfan for the full experience.
