Rhinog Mountains Track — Llanbedr to Cwm Nantcol via Bwlch Drws Ardudwy
Wales's hardest range. No crowds. No mercy.
The Rhinogydd are the forgotten mountains of Snowdonia — no ski lifts, no cafes, no crowds, just ancient gritstone moorland and tracks that have been rough since the Bronze Age. The drive up Cwm Nantcol from Llanbedr follows a narrow farm lane east before the tarmac disintegrates entirely and the track climbs toward Bwlch Drws Ardudwy — the Pass of the Door of Ardudwy — a cleft through the Rhinog ridge that shepherds and drovers used for centuries. The valley floor is scattered with standing stones and ancient field systems. Above the pass, the rock becomes serious and the descent into Cwm Teigl on the far side is genuinely rough.
This is Expert-level terrain — not because of extreme elevation but because of unrelenting rock, deep wheel ruts, and sections where route-finding on foot before committing is the sensible call. A lightly loaded short-wheelbase 4×4 with good articulation handles this better than a full-size overland rig. Underbody protection is strongly recommended. Best in late summer when the ground is firmest — winter and spring turns this into a mud-and-bog exercise that ends badly. No formal permits required. Harlech is the nearest town with fuel. Cell service is non-existent above the valley floor. Dispersed camping in the cwm is possible and the night sky up here, away from any light pollution, is properly dark.
