October Mountain State Forest Backbone Trail
Technical spine through Massachusetts' largest wilderness
The Backbone Trail system weaves through 16,000 acres of October Mountain’s wildest terrain, following old logging roads and CCC-era fire breaks through dense forest. The main spine road climbs to 2,000+ feet elevation, passing Felton Lake and connecting to the Appalachian Trail at several points. Side routes lead to beaver ponds, stone quarries, and remnants of 19th-century charcoal operations that once fueled the Berkshire iron industry.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions and route choice. The main roads require high-clearance 4WD, especially after rain when the rocky, root-crossed surface becomes treacherous. Spring mud season (March-May) can make sections impassable. No permits needed. Excellent dispersed camping throughout, with established sites at Felton Lake. Best tackled in summer through early fall. Bring recovery gear—cell service is nonexistent and you’re genuinely in the middle of nowhere out here.
