Buffalo Gap National Grassland Sand Hills Road
Prairie solitude on the Great Plains.
The Sand Hills Road cuts through 591,000 acres of native mixed-grass prairie in the Buffalo Gap National Grassland, where prairie dogs bark from their towns and bison once thundered across endless grassland. This network of primitive roads and two-tracks follows old ranching routes through the Pierre Shale Hills, offering glimpses of pronghorn antelope, sharp-tailed grouse, and some of the most intact prairie ecosystem left on the continent. The route connects several primitive camping areas and provides access to paleontology sites where fossilized sea creatures tell the story of ancient inland seas.
Rated moderate for route-finding challenges and seasonal conditions, this trail requires high-clearance vehicles and careful navigation skills during wet weather when the clay-based soils become impassable gumbo. Summer and fall offer the best conditions, though spring brings wildflower blooms worth the muddy risk. No permits required, but check with local ranchers about seasonal restrictions during calving season. Bring extra fuel, plenty of water, and a good map – cell service is nonexistent. What you get is solitude, massive skies, and a genuine feel for what the Great Plains looked like before the plow.
