Gold Basin to Hailey via the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway and Copper Basin High Desert (Idaho Classic South-to-North Run)
Idaho's open-sky volcanic basin, earned not gifted.
The Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway runs 53 miles of mostly gravel between Carey and Ketchum, but the honest way to drive it is the full south-to-north arc from Gold Basin through Copper Basin — a wide, open volcanic basin ringed by the 12,000-foot Pioneer peaks — before dropping through the Big Wood River drainage toward Hailey. Copper Basin itself is a standout: an enormous flat-bottomed former lakebed at 7,200 feet, framed by talus ridgelines, almost no trees, and the Pioneer crest to the west. The Road Creek campground sits mid-basin and is one of the better dispersed-style camps in central Idaho. The main track is hardpacked gravel suitable for high-clearance vehicles, but the shortcut spurs into the Pioneer foothills and toward Mackay Reservoir drop quickly into rougher two-track territory.
This route is achievable for any high-clearance 4WD in dry conditions, though the upper basin spurs demand more. Snow closes the byway from October to May with no exceptions — confirmed closure dates vary by year, check with the Sawtooth National Forest Ketchum Ranger District before you go. Fuel in Mackay or Ketchum; Copper Basin itself is a 35-mile dead zone. Cell service is absent in the basin and spotty on the approaches. No permits required. What you get is the scale of the Great Basin-meets-alpine-Idaho without the crowds, and in September the aspens on the lower flanks run gold hard enough to make you stop and get out.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this route, or do I need a lift?
Stock high-clearance trucks like a Tacoma or 4Runner are fine here. The dirt and gravel surface is rough in spots but nothing requires a lift — just avoid low-clearance cars and crossovers.
When does the route actually open after winter, and is snow a real concern?
June is the realistic open window — higher sections near 7,400 ft can hold snow into late May. September is the cutoff before early fall storms start making the basin unpredictable.
Do I need a permit to drive this route or camp along it?
No permit required to drive the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway or run this route. Dispersed camping on Sawtooth National Forest land is free and permit-free; standard Leave No Trace rules apply.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?
The Copper Basin high-desert stretch is the most demanding — washboard gravel, loose rock, and zero shade with no bailout options mid-route. It's not technically extreme, but it's exposed and unforgiving if you've got a soft tire or an overheating rig.
Where's the nearest gas, and how far out am I really running on fumes?
Mackay is your last reliable fuel stop before heading in — don't count on anything along the 53-mile route itself. Top off there; the closest town on the north end is Hailey, roughly 30 miles after you hit pavement again.
