Buffalo Gap National Grassland White River Dispersed Area
Wide-open grassland camping along old ranch roads near the White River, with maybe a dozen spots spread across several square miles of rolling prairie. Zero shade but incredible night skies — this is serious dark sky country. Most sites are just flat spots to park with existing fire rings from previous campers. Spring can be buggy and windy, summer gets hot with little relief.
Access from Highway 44 via BIA-2, then various ranch roads heading north toward the river. Roads are decent when dry but turn to gumbo when wet. Locals hunt here heavily in fall — wear orange or avoid the season entirely.
Open prairie camping with excellent stargazing
