Sage Creek Rim offers some of the most isolated dispersed camping in the Badlands region, scattered along the gravel Sage Creek Rim Road that parallels the park’s northern boundary. Sites are primitive pull-offs in mixed-grass prairie with commanding views across the badlands formations to the south. No facilities exist here — pack everything in and out. Buffalo herds occasionally graze nearby, and the area offers exceptional stargazing with minimal light pollution.
Access via County Road 590 from Highway 44, then follow Sage Creek Rim Road west. The road deteriorates in wet conditions, and high-clearance vehicles are recommended for the rougher sections. Spring through fall is best; winter access can be challenging with snow and mud. Camping is first-come, first-served with a 14-day limit.
