Buffalo Gap National Grassland Cedar Pass Dispersed Area
The Cedar Pass area provides dispersed camping in the Buffalo Gap National Grassland, characterized by rolling prairie punctuated by small cedar-filled draws. Sites are informal, scattered along jeep trails that wind through the grassland south of the main Badlands formations. The area offers genuine solitude – you might not see another camper for days. No facilities whatsoever, just open grassland where suitable flat spots abound.
Access via several ranch roads south of Highway 44 near Interior. Roads are unimproved dirt that can become impassable when wet – the local gumbo soil turns to sticky clay that will strand any vehicle. High-clearance recommended for the rougher two-tracks leading to the most secluded spots. Avoid during wet weather or spring snowmelt.
