Expert ridge running through Tuscarora Mountains
The spine of Tuscarora Mountain offers some of Pennsylvania’s most challenging ridge running, where old fire roads cling to knife-edge ridges 2,000 feet above the valleys. This route follows the mountain’s backbone from Cowans Gap through a series of abandoned quarries and mine sites, including the notorious Devil’s Race Course – a boulder field descent that’s claimed more than a few oil pans. The real test comes at Hemlock Run, where you’ll drop 800 feet through loose shale switchbacks before climbing back up through what locals call the Rock Garden.
This is expert-level terrain requiring aggressive tires, skid plates, and a spotter for the technical sections. Late fall offers the best conditions when summer’s undergrowth dies back and you can actually see your line choices. No water sources on the ridge, so pack everything you need. Cell service is decent on the heights but disappears in the hollows. The payoff is some of the best mountain views in Pennsylvania and the satisfaction of running one of the state’s gnarliest 4WD routes.
