Pine Grove Furnace State Park Iron Furnace Heritage Loop
Revolutionary War iron furnace ruins and quarry roads
The old furnace stack at Pine Grove Furnace towers over this network of maintenance roads that wind through what was once the heart of Pennsylvania’s iron empire. Built in 1764, these furnaces fed the Continental Army during the Revolution, and the quarry roads that served them now make for solid overlanding through mixed hardwood forest. The main loop follows the old ore hauling route past Laurel Lake, then climbs through Fuller Lake quarry where you’ll navigate between massive limestone pits and spoil piles.
This is easy running for any high-clearance vehicle, though the quarry section gets rocky after rain. Spring through fall works best when the park roads are maintained. You’ll find good dispersed camping opportunities near the old charcoal hearths, and the whole route connects to the broader Cumberland Valley trail network. It’s not remote wilderness, but it’s real Pennsylvania history you can drive through.
