Michaux State Forest Caledonia Iron Furnace Circuit
Iron furnace ruins through gentle mountain roads.
The Caledonia Iron Furnace Circuit winds through Michaux State Forest’s gentler terrain, connecting the restored 1850s furnace stack with dozens of charcoal hearth sites scattered through the hardwood forest. The main loop follows well-maintained dirt roads that served the iron industry for over a century, passing the massive stone ruins of Thaddeus Stevens’ furnace operation. Rocky Knob offers the best overlook across the Cumberland Valley, while Quarry Gap shows off the limestone quarries that provided flux for the furnaces.
This is easy overlanding perfect for stock high-clearance vehicles and families getting into backcountry driving. Spring wildflowers are spectacular, fall colors rival New England, and winter snow creates a different kind of beauty. No permits required, and camping is available at designated sites. Cell service works throughout most of the route. It’s Pennsylvania history you can drive through, with enough technical sections to keep things interesting but gentle enough for beginners to build confidence.
