Buchanan State Forest Cowans Gap Road Dispersed Area
This dispersed area sits along the forest service roads that branch off from Cowans Gap Road in Buchanan State Forest. You’ll find scattered pullouts and flat spots suitable for truck camping or small rigs, mostly tucked into the oak and pine woods. The area sees moderate use from hunters in fall and hikers accessing the Tuscarora Trail, but stays quiet most other times. Fire rings are present at some spots but bring your own water.
Access is via improved gravel roads that any vehicle can handle, though some of the better spots require a short detour down rougher tracks. Best from April through October when the roads are maintained. No facilities whatsoever — this is true boondocking in Pennsylvania’s south-central mountains.
