Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park — Klukshu River Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
This is proper wilderness camping on gravel bars and open flats along the Klukshu River, a short distance from the traditional Champagne and Aishihik First Nations fish camp at Klukshu village. The valley is wide, the sky is enormous, and the bears are real — this is some of the densest grizzly country in the Yukon. No facilities, no signage, no cell signal. You pick a flat spot, leave no trace, and keep a clean camp. Water from the river must be filtered. Fires may be restricted during dry periods — carry a stove and check with Yukon Environment before you go.
Access is via the unpaved Dalton Post Road south from Haines Junction off the Alaska Highway. The road is generally manageable for high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions but becomes slippery clay soup after rain — 4WD is strongly recommended. Season runs June through September; the road can be impassable in spring thaw and after heavy rain. This is First Nations traditional territory — travel respectfully and do not disturb the fish camp or cultural sites at Klukshu.
