Alsek River — Haines Junction Confluence Viewpoint
The Alsek River originates deep in Kluane National Park and runs southwest toward Glacier Bay in Alaska — it’s a serious wilderness river that sees more whitewater expeditions than vehicle traffic. From the Dezadeash Lake and Bates Lake road country south of Haines Junction, you get access to the upper Dezadeash drainage that feeds into the Alsek system, and on clear days the St. Elias Mountains framing the river corridor are staggering. This is bear country and moose country in equal measure. Bring your optics.
The viewpoint is accessible via pullouts along the Haines Road (Hwy 3) south of Haines Junction, where the Dezadeash River valley opens up wide. No formal facilities. The Haines Road stays open year-round but can be treacherous with ice in shoulder seasons — check Yukon 511 before committing.
