Built in 1931, this classic L-4 style fire lookout sits on the summit of Mount Baker in Washington’s North Cascades. The restored cabin-style structure provides shelter from the notorious Cascade weather and offers views that span from Mount Rainier to the Canadian peaks. On clear days, you can see the San Juan Islands and even Vancouver Island. The lookout is maintained by volunteers and occasionally staffed during peak fire season.
Reaching the lookout requires technical mountaineering skills and glacier travel experience — this isn’t a simple hike. Most climbers use the Easton Glacier route, which involves crevasse navigation and requires ropes, ice axes, and crampons. Weather can change rapidly, and whiteout conditions are common. Only attempt this with proper mountaineering experience and equipment.
