Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead — Mount Baker Wilderness
Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead is the jumping-off point for the Coleman Glacier route on Mount Baker — the most-climbed line on the peak. Sitting at around 3,700 feet off Forest Road 39 (Glacier Creek Road), it’s a gravel road accessible to high-clearance 2WD rigs in summer, though the upper miles get rough and rutted. The trailhead has a small parking lot, vault toilets, and a trail register. Views of Baker’s northwest face start almost immediately on the trail. For overlanders running the Mount Baker Highway corridor this is a must-stop POI even if you’re not climbing — the drive up FR 39 alone earns its mileage.
The road typically opens June and closes with early fall snowfall — call the Glacier Public Service Center before you commit in shoulder seasons. Parking fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. No overnight parking without a wilderness permit for camping beyond the lot. No water at the trailhead — haul your own in.
Drive-up access to Baker's Coleman Glacier.
