Mitre Peak dominates the head of Milford Sound like a granite cathedral, its sharp summit reflected perfectly in the still fjord waters on calm mornings. The main viewpoint sits right at the Milford Sound wharf where tour boats dock, offering an unobstructed view of the peak and surrounding waterfalls. Access is via the spectacular Milford Road (SH94), a winding 119km drive from Te Anau that’s an adventure itself. The road can close in winter due to avalanche risk, and sandflies are legendary here in summer — bring repellent.
