Skippers Bridge — 1901 Suspension Span Over the Shotover
Skippers Bridge is the payoff at the end of Skippers Canyon Road. It’s a single-lane suspension bridge built in 1901 to serve the gold miners working the Shotover, and it hangs roughly 90 metres above the river. The road to get here was hacked out of the schist cliffs by hand in the 1880s, and it still feels like it. Narrow, cut into the rock, with sheer drops on one side and few places to pass. Pull in at the bridge, walk out onto it, and look down the gorge. It’s quiet, rugged, and short on frills.
Take your time on the approach. Uphill traffic doesn’t always have right of way in practice, so let the narrow spots dictate who reverses. Plan on slow going and keep the dust down for anyone walking. Winter brings ice and rockfall risk in the shaded sections, and heavy rain can make the creek crossings ugly. Many rental agreements ban this road, so check yours before you commit. Go slow, leave the gates as you found them, and take your rubbish out. Have a dirty day.
