Skippers Canyon Road

Skippers Canyon Road is a 22km unsealed track that drops into a dramatic schist gorge above the Shotover River, northwest of Queenstown. It was originally carved by gold miners in the 1860s and it shows — this road is narrow, rough, and completely unforgiving in places, with sheer drops and no barriers. The canyon scenery is genuinely stunning, old mining relics are scattered throughout, and the suspension bridge at the bottom is a landmark in its own right.

Most rental car agreements explicitly void insurance on this road — check yours before you go. You need a competent 4WD and nerves to match. The road is one-lane with limited passing places; go early to reduce traffic conflicts. Flash flooding in the gorge is a real hazard after rain. No fuel, no services — Queenstown is your last stop for everything.
