Skippers Canyon Road — Arthurs Point to Skippers Bridge
Gold rush road hung off a Shotover cliff
Chinese and European miners hacked this road out of schist by hand in the 1880s to reach the Skippers goldfield, and it still feels like it. From Arthurs Point near Queenstown it climbs to Skippers Saddle, then drops into the Shotover River gorge. For the next stretch it is a single lane of gravel cut into a cliff, with a sheer drop to the river and no guardrails. You pass abandoned dredge workings and rusted mining relics, and finish at the old Skippers settlement and the historic Pioneer Bridge, strung high across the canyon.
The surface is easy gravel and the challenge is exposure. Passing places are tight, so you will be reversing along a cliff edge if you meet oncoming traffic. Uphill traffic has right of way, so be ready to back up. Many rental car contracts exclude this road, so check yours before you go. A stock 4WD or a high-clearance 2WD with good nerves will do, and wet weather and washouts can shut it. Cell service is spotty and there are no services past Arthurs Point. Allow half a day, bring a spare and offline maps. You get a front-row seat to New Zealand gold rush engineering. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock 4WD or high-clearance 2WD do Skippers Canyon Road?
Yes. It's a graded gravel road with ruts, washouts and loose rock, so ground clearance matters more than low-range gearing. Your tires and your nerve are the limiting factors, not the drivetrain.
Can I take a rental car up Skippers Canyon Road?
Check your rental agreement first. Most NZ rental companies exclude Skippers Road from cover, so any damage or recovery would be on you. Many people book a guided tour instead for this reason.
Is Skippers Canyon Road open in winter?
It's best from October to April. In winter, ice and frost linger in the shaded canyon sections, and heavy rain or snowmelt can bring slips and rockfall. Check current conditions with QLDC before you go, and don't attempt it during or right after a big storm.
What's the hardest part of the drive?
The narrow, cliff-hung sections high above the Shotover River. The road is one lane with a sheer drop on the downhill side and few places to pass. Drive slowly, use the pull-outs, and take the uphill-has-priority convention seriously by backing up to a passing spot when needed.
What should I sort out before heading in, given the remoteness?
Fill up in Queenstown and carry water, food and a spare tire. There are no services on the 22.5 km (14 mi) run to Skippers Bridge, and cell service is spotty. Download offline maps and tell someone your return time, because you'll be turning around and driving back out the same way, so allow 3-4 hours.
