Mitre Peak Milford Sound
Mitre Peak dominates the entrance to Milford Sound, jutting up from sea level like a cathedral spire. This near-perfect pyramid of granite and schist is one of New Zealand’s most photographed landmarks. The peak reflects perfectly in the still waters of the fjord during calm conditions, typically early morning or late evening. Waterfalls cascade from the surrounding cliffs, and seals often bask on nearby rocks.
Best viewed from the Milford Sound cruise terminals or various lookout points along the final stretch of Milford Road (State Highway 94). The 120-kilometer drive from Te Anau includes the Homer Tunnel and spectacular alpine scenery. Road can close in winter due to avalanche danger — check conditions year-round.
