Takitimu Mountains Four Wheel Drive Track
Alpine knife-edge driving above the clouds
The Takitimu Mountains 4WD track follows Department of Conservation culling roads from the 1960s, when helicopters couldn’t reach these remote peaks and rangers needed vehicle access to control deer populations. Starting from Mossburn, you’ll climb steep shingle roads through beech forest to the exposed alpine tops at 1200m, where the track becomes a knife-edge ridge route with drop-offs on both sides. The notorious ‘Knife Edge’ section near Mount Titiroa demands precise wheel placement—one wrong move sends you tumbling 500 meters into the valley below.
Difficult to expert rating depending on conditions. Modified 4WD with diff locks, low range, and good approach/departure angles essential—stock rigs will struggle on the steeper pitches and loose scree. Weather changes fast up here; snow possible year-round above 1000m. Best attempted December through March, and only in stable high-pressure systems. No permits required but inform someone of your plans—cell service is nonexistent and helicopter rescue expensive. Multiple wilderness camping spots along the ridge, but pack everything in and out. The reward is some of New Zealand’s most dramatic mountain driving and panoramic views across three provinces.
