Katse Dam Rest Camp — Lesotho Highlands Water Project Lakeshore Campground
Katse Dam Rest Camp sits on the southern shore of Katse Reservoir inside the Lesotho Highlands, managed by the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority. It’s a no-frills government camp — ablution blocks, braai stands, and a few grassed pitches overlooking the dam wall and the deep blue of the impoundment. The altitude keeps nights cool year-round, and the views across the Maluti ridgelines are legitimately stunning at first light. It sees engineers, project staff, and the occasional overlander — not tourist crowds. That suits most people running this route just fine.
Access is off the Katse Dam main road through the LHDA gate — check in at the visitors centre. The road into Katse from Leribe or Thaba-Tseka is sealed but narrow with blind corners; watch for livestock. The dam visitors centre offers basic information on dam tours. Cell signal is spotty to partial on Lesotho networks. Stock up on fuel and supplies before arriving — Katse village is small and provisioning is limited.
