Katse Dam Reservoir — Maluti Mountains Lakeshore Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

The LHDA access road skirting Katse Dam drops you into some of the most dramatic impounded highland scenery in southern Africa. On the reservoir’s eastern and northern arms, where the tar gives way to gravel and the crowds disappear entirely, overlanders have been pulling off on flat lake-level benches and high-cut road shoulders for years. No facilities, no signs, no fee — just wind, altitude sitting around 2,000m, and the concrete monolith of Africa’s second-largest arch dam looming at your back. Mornings here are cold and clear; afternoon mist rolls hard off the highlands.

Access via the LHDA tarred road from Thaba-Tseka or from the Leribe side is straightforward for any capable 4WD — the sealed surface ends in patches and the gravel side tracks down to water-level require ground clearance. No open fires on reservoir margins. Water from the lake is not treated. Nearest fuel is Thaba-Tseka or Katse village. Best visited April through October — summer rains turn side tracks to clay soup.

Highland reservoir solitude at 2,000m.
