Molimo Nthuse Pass — Ha Lejone Valley Dispersed Camp
Molimo Nthuse — ‘God Help Me’ in Sesotho — is the mountain pass on the A3 highway midway between Maseru and the highlands interior, and it earns the name. Below the pass on the eastern descent, the Ha Lejone valley opens into a wider, flatter river corridor where overlanders have long staged overnight camps off the gravel shoulder. It’s not developed, not signed, and not managed — just a sheltered bend where the road widens and the valley floor gives you room to camp without blocking track traffic. A creek runs nearby most of the year; treat before drinking.
The A3 through here is paved in sections and deteriorated gravel in others — high-clearance 2WD can manage in dry conditions, but the first wet spell turns the gravel stretches into slick clay. The valley sits around 2,000 metres, which is notably warmer than the plateau camps further east — a reasonable first-night stop before committing to the full highland push. Local Basotho communities are friendly; a small gift of food or tea goes a long way.
