Maletsunyane River Valley — Semonkong Gorge Rim Dispersed Camp

The Maletsunyane River cuts a deep sandstone-walled gorge through the southern Lesotho highlands before pitching 192 metres over the Maletsunyane Falls near Semonkong village. The grassy plateau above the gorge rim offers open dispersed camping on communal land — flat enough for a rooftop tent, wide enough to feel properly alone. It’s the closest wild-camp option to one of southern Africa’s most dramatic waterfalls, and it earns every kilometre of corrugated dirt road to get here. Evenings are cold, stars are absurd, and the river noise carries up from the canyon floor.

The track into Semonkong from the west is a known washboard slog — averaging 40 km/h is ambitious in the dry season, slower in the wet. Respect the communal land: ask locally before pitching far from the village, keep noise low, and pack out everything you pack in. No facilities whatsoever. Water from the river requires treatment. The falls themselves are a short walk from the rim-area camping ground used by overlanders staging here.
