Mokhotlong District — Senqu River Upper Valley Dispersed Camp
The upper Senqu River valley northeast of Mokhotlong is one of the few places in southern Africa where you can pull a 4×4 off a dirt track, drop to a river terrace, and have the entire Maluti-Drakensberg horizon to yourself. The valley floor sits above 2,700m, flanked by basalt escarpment walls and braided river channels that cut through thin alpine grass. Nights are cold year-round — expect frost even in summer — and the silence is absolute. No facilities, no fire rings, no signage. Stock up on fuel, water, and food in Mokhotlong before heading out; there is nothing between you and the plateau.
Access is via rough dirt tracks leading northeast from the Mokhotlong–Sani Top road corridor. A capable 4WD is mandatory — tracks are deeply rutted, river crossings are unmarked, and the plateau weather can close in fast. Best window is October through April; June–August sees snow and ice at elevation. Inform someone of your route before departing. Carry your own water or filter from the Senqu — it runs clear above the valley settlements.
Basalt plateau solitude above 2,700m.
