El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve — Gran Desierto de Altar Volcanic Field Dispersed Camp

This is Sonoran Desert at its most primal. Dispersed camping within the El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve places you on black basalt lava fields (malpaís) and red cinder plains within reach of Elegante Crater — a 1.6km wide maar crater that drops 240 meters. No shade, no water, no fire rings. Bring everything you need. Nights are genuinely dark out here; the Milky Way is absurd. Daytime heat from late May through September is dangerous — desert serious, not inconvenient serious.

Access is via the paved México 8 from Sonoyta to the reserve entrance, then maintained dirt roads to the crater area. CONANP requires you to register and pay a fee at the visitor station near the highway. Vehicle minimum is high-clearance — some sections toward secondary craters are rougher. No open fires permitted. Verify entry requirements and fee schedule directly with CONANP before you roll in; enforcement is real.
