This 330,000-acre monument along the Mexican border showcases the most diverse Sonoran Desert habitat in the country. The park’s crown jewel is the 21-mile Ajo Mountain Drive, a one-way dirt loop suitable for high-clearance vehicles that winds through desert washes and rocky terrain. Twin Peaks Campground offers developed sites, while backcountry camping requires permits and navigation skills.
The monument’s remote location means serious preparation – bring extra water, food, and emergency gear. Summer temps regularly exceed 110°F, making winter through spring the prime visiting season. The Ajo Mountain Drive and other backcountry routes close during extreme heat. Cell service is nonexistent throughout most of the monument.
