Bonneville Salt Flats Speed Week Racing Area
The Bonneville Salt Flats form a crystalline white expanse where land speed records have been set for over a century. During Speed Week in August, hot rods and streamliners rocket across the hardpan at 200+ mph, but most of the year it’s an otherworldly landscape of pure salt crust reflecting the sky. The racing oval and timing equipment are clearly marked, with spectator areas during events and open exploration when racing isn’t active.
Access via I-80 Exit 4 on a maintained gravel road. The salt surface varies seasonally — winter flooding creates a mirror lake, spring brings the hardest crust, and summer heat can soften it to slush. Avoid driving on wet salt as it’s corrosive and you’ll sink. Bring plenty of water and rinse your vehicle afterward.
