Bonneville Salt Flats International Speedway
This otherworldly expanse of crystallized salt stretches to the horizon like a frozen white sea, broken only by distant mountain ranges. The perfectly flat surface has hosted land speed racing since 1914, with current records exceeding 400 mph. During dry periods, you can drive directly onto the salt for photos and exploration, but the surface can be soft after rain. The racing season runs August through October, drawing international teams and spectators.
Access via Exit 4 off I-80 west of Wendover, then 5 miles north on a gravel road. The salt is most accessible and firm during late summer and fall. Spring and early summer often bring standing water from snowmelt. No facilities exist on the flats themselves—bring water, sun protection, and be prepared for intense UV reflection off the white surface.
