Glencoe — Altnafeadh Lay-By and Rannoch Moor Roadside Wild Camp
Altnafeadh is the gravel lay-by and rough ground where the A82 meets the Devil’s Staircase path and the western lip of Rannoch Moor opens up in front of you. It’s bleak in the best way — Buachaille Etive Mòr dominates the view east, the moor stretches to nothing north, and the River Coupall runs cold and clear below the road. There’s no formal camping here; this is Scottish outdoor access rights in action. Expect wind, expect midges from May through September, expect other vans and roof-tents rolling in on summer evenings. Space for a handful of vehicles on the rough ground beside the lay-by.
The A82 runs past constantly, so it’s not silent — but park up and walk 200 metres in any direction and civilisation disappears fast. Best in late September through October when the moor turns amber and the midges are gone. No facilities whatsoever. Pack in, pack out. High-clearance not required — the pull-in is off tarmac.
Rannoch Moor at your door, midges included.
