Cairnsmore of Carsphairn Hill Track — Afton Reservoir to Carsphairn via Black Shoulder

Galloway peat and silence above Afton Water.

Difficult

The Cairnsmore of Carsphairn massif sits in the northern fringe of the Galloway Hills, and the estate and forestry tracks that climb its western flanks via Black Shoulder have been used by shepherds and miners for centuries. Starting near the Afton Reservoir on the Water of Ae road system northeast of New Cumnock, the route grinds up through Forestry and Land Scotland plantation breaks before cresting exposed moorland above 2,000 feet. The track surface alternates between loose chirt, deep peat ruts, and water-saturated grass — the kind of going that pulls at your diff lock before you’ve had your morning coffee. Gate codes and permission are required through the local estate; do not assume open access simply because a track exists.

This is genuine high-clearance territory. A stock 4WD will struggle in wet conditions; a lifted vehicle with all-terrain or mud tyres and a rear locker is the smart choice. There are no services between New Cumnock and Carsphairn village — fuel up in Ayr or Castle Douglas before you go anywhere near this ground. The route is best driven late June through September when the peat is at its firmest, though even then standing water is guaranteed. What you get in return is total isolation, views across Loch Doon and the Rhinns of Kells, and the genuine feeling that nobody else is out here — because they’re not.
