Sardis Lake Dam Authority Maintenance Road

Built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s, this maintenance road follows the eastern edge of Sardis Dam through terrain that saw Confederate cavalry action during the Holly Springs Raid. The route starts at the Corps visitor center and climbs through steep clay cuts to reach the spillway maintenance area, where you’ll find concrete inspection points overlooking the 98,520-acre reservoir. The technical section comes at Mile 4, where the road drops through a series of sharp switchbacks to reach the turbine house—locals call it ‘Transmission Killer Hill.’

Moderate difficulty with some technical clay climbs that get slick when wet—high-clearance 4WD recommended, though some stock trucks make it during dry spells. Spring and fall are prime, summer’s passable but hot. No permits needed, but this is active Corps property so respect the gates. Limited camping options, but the payoff is accessing some of the best bass fishing holes on Sardis Lake plus Civil War history you won’t find in any guidebook.
