T.O. Fuller State Park Sand Ridge Technical Loop
Deep sand and creek crossings near downtown
T.O. Fuller State Park’s backcountry maintenance roads wind through ancient Mississippi River sand ridges and bottomland hardwood forests on the Tennessee-Mississippi border. The technical loop follows old CCC roads from the 1930s through the Chucalissa Archaeological Site area, dropping into steep creek bottoms where Nonconnah Creek tributaries have carved deep gullies through the sand. The most challenging section is the Riverside Drive connection, where loose sand meets seasonal water crossings that can strand unprepared vehicles during spring floods.
This moderate to difficult route demands 4WD low-range and aggressive tread for the deep sand sections, especially after rain when the creek crossings turn technical. Park rangers allow access to the maintenance roads but prefer notification, and the route becomes impassable during high water periods (typically December through April). Best tackled in late summer when creek levels drop and sand firms up. The payoff includes solitude rare this close to downtown Memphis, plus access to archaeological sites that predate European contact by centuries.
